The Talbots, The Earls of Shrewsbury and Talbot, the premier earldom of England were an ancient military and landed family. So what was the impact of this family upon the lives of the local inhabitants?



Join us to find out on Thursday 2nd April at St Georges and Priorslee Parish Centre, St Georges, Telford. Start time 7.30pm.

Sylva Watts History Day

 On Saturday 18th April 2015 at Shifnal Village Hall a programme of talks, walks and exhibits has been organised by Shifnal Local History Group to honour the life and work of Dr. Sylvia Watts.

The programme is as follows:
10:00 - Welcome
10:05 - Remembering Sylvia
10:45 - Refreshment break
11:00 - The pleasures and pitfalls of local history
12:00 - The life of Archdeacon Joseph Plymley/Corbett, 1759-1838; Son and Servant of Shropshire.
13:00 - Lunch break - not provided please bring your own or there are places in Shifnal to eat.
13:45 - Walks, visits and exhibitions
14:45 - Refreshment break
15:00 - Hannah Cullwick - a Shifnal wench
16:00 - Close of proceedings

Drake the Man & Politician by Sue Jackson

Sue will not be talking about Drake the sailor who defeated the Armada after finishing his bowls game. Instead it is the man's compassionate side that she will explore. Drake was Deputy Lieutenant of Devon and an Honorary Privy Councillor as such he sat on many committees.  He campaigned to stop shops opening on Sunday was Mayor of Plymouth and a magistrate and in these capacities worked to save a young girl accused of murder.
