Among the many splendid features of our county, the River Severn has a special place, not only because of its dominant physical presence but also because of the important part it has played in our history. This talk will focus on four aspects of the river: its physical features; navigation and trade; hazards and hindrances; and river crossings.

However, Watt’s achievements were not solitary ones. William Penny Brookes, a man of Olympian vision, established the Wenlock
Olympian Society (WOS) in 1850. WOS and Brookes went on to spread the Olympian Games of Much Wenlock to the rest of Shropshire, the whole of the country, to its ancient home of Greece and then to the whole world. William Penny Brookes had a passion for the benefits of exercise, healthy bodies and minds, and his work carried on after his death. His legacy being recognised by the world at the celebrations of London 2012. As the founder of the modern Olympic movement, Baron de Coubertin said in 1897: "The Wenlock people alone have preserved and followed the true Olympian traditions." The Anglo-Saxon halls at Atcham were first identified from the air in the drought of 1975 but had never been investigated until in 2017, a small evaluation exercise was carried out on the site to investigate damage to the site. The lecture will present the results and current interpretation. What were we wearing in the seventh century? In the absence of detailed evidence, the speaker will show what sources are available to support her reconstructions, from archaeology to terminology. Sarah Thursfield is a needlewoman who is fascinated by the evolution of early dress, and the author of the bestselling - In its own world -- Medieval Tailor's Assistant.

The City of Hereford is famous for the excavations that took place on its Anglo-Saxon defences and houses in the 1970s and 80s. What is less well known is that it contains many hidden standing historic houses of particularly early date. The talk will review the state of archaeological and historical research in the city, and look at new sources that have become available, like urban LiDAR. The hamlet of Tilley has a closely guarded secret - its historic built heritage. In 2015, local residents George Nash & Alastair Reid made an application to run an archaeological project that would delve into the history of the building stock and it's medieval timber-framing tradition.
